A Brief Early History:
Although I was born on Corregidor, I spent my
childhood in Antonio Rivera, District of Tondo, Manila,
Island of Luzon, Republic of the Philippine Islands.
My father, Procopio Kabahit, was from the southern part of
the city of Leyte, on one of the Visayan Islands, Philippines.
My mother, Rosa Acidillo, was from San Mateo, province of Rizal, Island of Luzon, Philippines.
They met on Corregidor, married and started a family... a big family: Benjamin, Jose, Vicente, Estela, Johnny (that's me), Helen, Ricardo, Maximo, Rosario (Rose) & Maria Paz.
My
father served in the Philippine Scouts during World War II.

Scouts were the first and last of what some might call American colonial troops.
But they were not colonials.
The first Scout organizations were created in
1901 during the American occupation of the Philippine Islands by the induction
of Filipinos into the service of the U. S. Armed Forces. When war came in
1941, the Scouts were trained and ready. The 26th Cavalry Regiment (PS)
supported by the 23rd and 24th FA Battalions, distinguished itself in the first
days after the initial Japanese landings. During the
withdrawal of the Northern Luzon Force the 26th Cavalry (PS) was the rear guard.
The Scouts continually and aggressively counter-attacked the
Japanese tanks and sacrificed their lives to protect the Filipino and American
troops as they fell back.
Following WWII, Congress approved
induction of the Philippine Scouts into the Regular U.S. Army. That's exactly what my father did. He retired from the US Army
after 30 years, then worked for the US Postal Service for 20 years and then
finally retired..

I was the first son to
immigrate
to the USA, in 1954. At that time there wasn't a lot of military air
travel. So, I spent 30 days at sea aboard the USS Cleveland. I
traveled alone and there was nothing to see except the
blue Pacific Ocean.
I
finally arrived in the USA on Pier 41, San Francisco, California,
where we lived on Natoma Street in
the Mission District.
